Yalecrest Historic Preservation Update

Several months ago the Executive Board of the Yalecrest Neighborhood Council made a formal request to the Salt Lake City Historic Landmarks Commission to begin the application process to have the Yalecrest Historic District considered for a Local Historic District.  The District encompasses the same boundaries as the Yalecrest Neighborhood Council.  The boundaries are Sunnyside Avenue to 1300 South, 1300 East to 1900 East.

The impetus for this request came largely from concerns voiced by many residents for many years across our entire neighborhood that something needs to be done to protect the charm and character of our Yalecrest neighborhood.  Many voiced their frustration with our current Yalecrest Compatible Infill ordinance because it doesn't stop historic homes from being torn down and it allows oversized and historically-insensitive remodels and additions.

Other neighborhoods within the city also are exploring the possibility of a Local Historic District designation.  The formal request was made because the Executive Board wanted to insure that Yalecrest would be given top priority as the city considers neighborhood protection and preservation.

At the March 3, 2010 Yalecrest meeting, George Kelner will discuss our progress with the city in terms of creating safeguards to preserve the charm and character of our Yalecrest neighborhood.  Sometime in 2010, the City Council plans to vote on the new City-wide Historic Preservation Plan. Adding new Local Historic Districts and/or Conservation Districts is part of this Plan.  The Preservation Plan notes that the Yalecrest neighborhood status is "compromised", has a priority level of "high" and should "consider stronger protections to control demolitions and teardowns".

Information regarding Local Historic Districts, Conservation Districts and Infill Ordinances can be found on the Yalecrest web site (see Documents section).  There you can find a link to the Historic Preservation Plan (132 pages) along with other documents such as the Yalecrest Nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.  The Nomination was written by an architectural historian.  You might want to check and see if your house is written up in the Nomination.  www.ycccslc.com.  If you have questions you would like addressed please email George at kelnergeo@msn.com.

Replacing lights in our street lamps   (posted on Wednesday, December 03, 2008)
If you have an older/original street lamp (those that were in the neighborhood before residents started putting them in theirselves about 15 years ago) and the light goes out the city is responsible for replacing it. Call 1-800-814-4311 to request a light replacement. It is helpful to have the pole number to use as a reference, this is usually on a yellow tag attached to the pole. Otherwise the newer street lamps are the property owners responsibility to maintain.
